5 /5 Barb Muzyk: Ive been working out at Macomb Athletic Gym for about a month now. Mike, my personal trainer, is great. He knows what hes doing and thats especially important for me because I have osteoarthritis throughout my body and hes fantastic at coming up with exercises that I can do so I can regain my strength but not create new injuries or exacerbate existing ones. Hes also fun so that makes the workouts more enjoyable.
Ive met the owners and everyone on the staff and everyone is very, very nice. They create a very comfortable environment to work out in. After my workouts I always plop myself down at one of the desks in the lobby and chat with the owners/staff for a while before I leave. Theyre just really nice, fun people.
The gym is huge. Its so big that no matter how many cars are in the parking lot I dont have to wait for exercise equipment to be available. They have enough equipment and the place is so large that it never appears crowded. Theres plenty of space and equipment for everyone.
I dont think Ive been in a gym that has more space or workout equipment than Macomb Athletic Club and all the equipment is in good, working condition. Theres also a huge variety of equipment so whatever youre looking for, they probably have it. I have yet to see an "out of order" sign on any of the exercise machines. The machines are clean - theres no dust anywhere everything is put away. I dont see free weights all over the place. The members and staff are very good at ensuring that the free weights are put away.
They have a very large 2nd room that has a basketball net and members use it. (Even the net is in good condition.) That same area is also used for group classes and they have quite a variety. I havent tried all of them so I cant say exactly what the classes are about but I can give you their titles: Sculpt and Tone, Armageddon (that sounds like its a challenging class), Buns and Guns (butt and biceps, maybe?), Womens Self Defense, and Stretch and Restore. Classes last from 45 to 60 minutes, depending on the class. The classes are free for members.
Theres also a boxing ring on the opposite side of that room that is used for sparring. Upstairs, above the boxing ring are several heavyweight punching bags for punching and kicking. They also have a couple of what I think are called "speed bags." Those are the small round punching bags that you punch with your fists to improve your speed and coordination.
On the opposite side of the 1st floor of the room there are very large tires that Ive seen people on tv programs like American Ninja Warrior push/pull around as part of their training. I doubt Ill ever use one of those. They probably weigh twice as much as I do.
The womens locker room is clean and very pretty. There are plenty of lockers (you need to bring your own lock). In addition to the standard sink and toilets they have plugs for hair driers, changing rooms, showers and a dry sauna. My husband told me the mens locker room also has a dry sauna.
If youre looking for a nice gym, and especially if youre looking for personal training, you should definitely check out Macomb Athletic Club.
