1 /5 LURIN FARRAH: I scheduled an appointment to open a new account and left a message inquiring about the requirements for a Canadian citizen to open a US bank account.
A day before the appointment, Tony, an employee called me, and I explained to him my situation and clarified that I have a rental agreement in the US, my Canadian passport, Canadian drivers license and social insurance number. I asked him if anything else is required to open a bank account and he said “no, you should be fine” However, when I drove three hours with a baby to the appointment the next day, unfortunately, Tony was busy with a client and Andrea Grimes met me, and since she “saw”me she said “you are Canadian ? This might not work”
I called another branch to ask what is required and they confirmed that if i have a residence address in the states i should be able to open a bank account.
Andrea was curious and asked me many questions that are not necessary or relevant to see if I’m qualified to open a bank account. There was no reason to ask me for work visa as I’m not going to work in the US soon. She tried to raise her voice and mentioned that I’m not allowed to work in US without a work visa, although I never mentioned anything about working there as i Live in Canada and have a business there.
I wasn’t sure if it’s Immigration firm or Bank.
Unfortunately, it obviously was a selective decision.
BTW the only reason for opening a bank account was to receive inherited money.
This experience was extremely disappointing and unprofessional, as I had to spend nearly seven hours on the road for nothing, all due to a racist attitude towards me. She could not have been more rude to me.
